I visited the Anne Frank house for the first time as a kid back in the early 2000’s. It was the first destination I had when in Amsterdam and one of my first international memories in general. I am very lucky to have been able to visit the Anne Frank house and have the privilege to see in person what she and her family went through.
I think everyone should try to experience everything that they can in their life and open their mind to learn about times in history.
Yes, information about World War II can be found online or in history books, but seeing it with your own eyes and standing in the places they stood gives you a different perfective and really opens your mind to things you cannot get from just looking at pictures or reading about it. I believe the best way to experience something is to personally get out into the world and just do it.
There’s something special about seeing something with your own eyes, and in my opinion, it is 100000x better and teaches me so much more than simply reading about it. The Anne Frank House will only scratch the surface of this horrific war, but still impacted me greatly.
(I am in no way saying I am an expert on World War II or can ever fully understand what the Jews or anyone went through during this horrific time in history. This is just my personal thoughts and experiences. I think everyone should open their mind and try to learn as much about history as possible.)
Some may wonder why the Anne Frank House is this such a popular tourist destination? Why would someone want to see what Jewish people went through and have to experience these kind of emotions if they are not forced to do so? I understand, but I truly believe that in order to create a better tomorrow we must educate ourselves as much as we can and step outside our comfort zones. The only way to truly grow as a person is to continuously push yourself to do things that scare you.

A little back story about the Anne Frank House
World War 2 started on September 1 1939. It wasn’t until July 6 1942 that the Frank family had to go into hiding at this house in Amsterdam. There are two parts of the house: the main house and the annex. The annex is a hidden room behind a bookcase where the family and others who joined them had to hide. The annex held 8 people and was only 450 square feet (42 square meters). The family and friends all lived here in hiding for just over two years. Unfortunately, about two years later on August 4 1944 everyone in the house was found and arrested and brought to concentration camps. Anne Frank’s father was the only one to survive the Holocaust.
Things to know before you book
1) The Anne Frank House is located at Prinsengracht 263.
The entrance is around the corner at Westermarkt 20.
2) Plan head and buy your tickets in advance.
You can book up to 2 months in advance.
3) No photos are allowed inside the museum
This is to preserve the original items and keep them around for as long as possible.
4) Be respectful of those around you.
The Anne Frank house is a VERY popular tourist destination, and that means it is usually very crowded. Be respectful to those around you and to this wonderful museum and its workers.
I would highly recommend to read Anne Frank’s Diary. You can purchase it online here. You can even get it at your local library for free. I really enjoyed this book not just because it taught me about the Holocaust, but more because it was written by someone who was actually going through it. You can read about what she was doing each day, things that scared her, her daily life as a young girl, and so much more. I believe that is why this book is so popular. It gives the reader someone’s real life experience and that is so hard to come by and my favorite way to learn about history because it is not just beaten down with facts and dates and numbers…but instead real thoughts.
