The Temple of Zeus

The Temple of Zeus

What is the Temple of Zeus?

The Temple of Zeus is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It is also one of the most important and sacred temples of all of Athens and was once the city’s largest temple.   I love The Temple of Zeus for its amazing history and beautiful architecture.  It is one of my favorite historical landmarks in Greece, and you cannot miss it on your trip to Athens!

How Big is the Temple?

The Temple of Zeus was once 41 meters by 108 meters long. There was even a 13-meter-tall statue of Zeus inside the temple for years!  Unfortunately, as the years passed a lot of the temple has been destroyed. As a result, the site is now 29 meters by 70 meters. (according to google).  Zeus’s Temple is completely outside and all that remains are columns that once held the temple together! It is forever an extremely historical and breathtaking place to visit and imagine what it once was.

When was the Temple of Zeus built?

Zeus’ Temple started being built in 174 BC and later finished in 131 AD.

Where is the Temple of Zeus located?

The Temple of Zeus is located on the south-east side of Athens’ Acropolis.  It is about 500 meters from the base of the Acropolis and 700 meters from Syntagma Square (read more about Athens here).  Zeus’s Temple is a very easily accessible place and should definitely be included to your list of places to visit during your tour around the sites of Athens.

Who built the Temple of Zeus?

The Temple of Zeus’ construction was started by the King of Syria Antiochus IV Epiphanes along with the Roman architect Kossoutios in 174BC and later completed in 131AD by the Roman emperor Hadrian.

What is the Temple of Zeus like today?

The Temple of Zeus is still know as Greece’s Biggest temple. Zeus’s Temple still has 14-20 marble columns that still stand. It is fully outside and can be seen from close distances around Athens!

Does it cost to visit the Temple of Zeus?

There is a very small entrance fee to get into the temple grounds. You can pay when you get there or book online if you want. Make sure you go early though because the temple closes at 3pm!

I hope this guide helped you understand more about the Temple of Zeus! It is a must see during your trip to Athens! It is very easily accessible, cheap, and definitely worth putting on your bucket list!
