Athens, Greece is the only city in the world I have been to more than twice. It is one of my favorite cities / countries in the world, and I am so excited to finally tell you all about my experiences in this city and later country. There is so much to do in this beautiful city, and you cannot miss it! Athens is also very cheap and one of the cheapest places to fly into Europe from America, so there is no excuse not to go!
Athens, Greece is one of the most famous and historical places in the world. It is home to some of the most beautiful and ancient monuments ever to exist. Not only that, but Athens is also a very beautiful city full of rich culture, wonderful people, delicious food, unforgettable views and so much more. You will not be bored on or during your visit to Athens, Greece. There is so much to do in this beautiful city.
Here are the top 10 things you cannot miss on your trip to Athens, Greece
1. Acropolis
The Acropolis of Athens is of course the most iconic and popular place to visit in Athens. The acropolis is a small citadel located at the top of the highest rock top overlooking all of Athens, Greece. The most popular site at the Acropolis is the Parthenon. It does get very crowded so if you want less crowds I would get there early or go on a weekday during the day. The Acropolis will still be busy regardless, but the less people the better! It also costs money to get into the acropolis, but if you are a student you can get a discount. Don’t miss this beautiful site in Athens.
2. Parthenon
The Parthenon is quite easily the most popular site in Athens. It is dedicated to the Greek Goddess Athena, and it was completed in 438BC. You definitely cannot miss this historic masterpiece. It is located at the Acropolis in the middle of the city of Athens. Make sure to visit the beautiful Parthenon when you visit Athens!
3. Panathenaic Stadium
You can’t go all the way to Athens and not visit the most epic Olympic stadium of all time. The Panathenaic Stadium was first constructed in 330BC and the only stadium in the world constructed entirely with marble. It was used for various events in the 20th century and later used for the Olympic games again in 2004. The Panathenaic Stadium is one of the most famous historic sites in all of Athens, and you cannot miss it!
4. Temple of Zeus
The Temple of Zeus is dedicated to the Greek god Zeus as the head of the Olympic gods. It is a former temple at the center of the city of Athens. The Temple of Zeus is located very close to the Acropolis and Hadrian’s Arch. It is the remains of what once was the temple. I like to visit and imagine what it once looked like years ago.
5. Theatre of Dionysus
The Theatre of Dionysus is located on the South Side of the Acropolis. It is one of the most famous theatres of Ancient Greece. It is where many plays, competitions, festivals and more took place back in the BC times. You can easily walk to it when you are visiting the sites at the Acropolis.
6. Syntagma square
Syntagma Square is a great place to hang out, shop, get a drink, go to restaurants, and view the acropolis from afar. It is a great place to enjoy the atmosphere that is Athens at any time of day or night. You can get to it right off of the subway.
7. Church of Panagia Kapnikarea
The Church of Panagia Kapnikarea is a Greek orthodox and one of the oldest churches in all of Athens. It is located right off the Syntagma square.
8. Monument a Gorham
The Monument a Gorham is one of the many monuments in a walkable distance in Athens. Take a walk through history and walk around the historical phenomenon that is the story of Athens. There are many other close historic monuments you can visit along your way.
9. Roman forum of Athens
The Roman forum of Athens (or the Roman Agora) is a series of Roman buildings located just North of the acropolis. It was constructed in the 1st Century BC. There are many monuments around the area, and it is a great place to walk through history.
10. Hadrian’s Arch
Hadrian’s Arch is the separation from the new and old cities of Athens. It stands close to the Temple and Zeus and other small monuments around the acropolis area. Take a walk-through history and walk under Hadrian’s Arch!
