Osaka, Japan

My favorite city in Japan

Top places to Visit in Osaka, Japan

Osaka is my favorite city in Japan.  I love that it has city life as well as beautiful cultural shrines, temples and history. Osaka not only has amazing history and temples, but it also has some of the best food ever and my favorite city and night life of all of Japan. Osaka has a little bit of everything and is one of the most famous cities in Japan.  Osaka can be toured for days or even weeks or more, but this list only covers some of my favorites over a few days!
There is a lot to do in Osaka, and this is just a small list for a weekend in the city.

Here are my top 10 things to do in a weekend (or Day) in Osaka, Japan

1) Osaka Castle

The Osaka Castle is the number one spot you cannot miss when you visit Osaka.  It is the top tourist attraction for a reason.  It is a beautiful castle that is located in the heart of the city.   There is a small ticket fee, but it gives you access to the castle and museum inside! Try to go on less saturated times, but I went during the day on a Saturday, and it wasn’t that crowded!

2) Get food at Dotonbori

Osaka is known to be one of the greatest places to get food in Japan, and one of the best places to find the best food is at Dotonbori.  There are so many different kinds of foods to try from.
To read about the types of foods to try in Japan read here.

3)     Visit Dotonbori

There is so much to do in the area of Dotonbori in Osaka, Japan.  It is known for its amazing night life, food, and restaurants.   It is similar to the life of Tokyo, but it isn’t as crowded since it is a smaller city.  This should not fool you though because not crowded doesn’t mean much.  There will still be thousands of people and a lot of places to mingle, meet and drink.

4)    Visit the Gilco Sign

You cannot miss the famous Gilco sign when you visit Osaka.  It is a huge sign right over the river that is easily seem when you get to Dotonbori.  Gilco man is a representation of Gilco candy, but it has been used to represent a lot of other things throughout the years.   It is a famous landmark that you cannot miss once you get to Dotonbori in Osaka.

5) Sumiyoshi Shrine

Sumiyoshi Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Japan.  It is very beautiful and has great significance to all of Japan! It is very beautiful and one of my favorite shrines in the city of Osaka. There is lots to see inside and around the shrine.

6)    Umeda Sky Building

Umenda Sky building is a unique and high building that is a great place to look out over the city of Osaka.  It has amazing views that cannot be beat.  You can look at it from below or climb / ride to the top to look over the city of Osaka.

7)    Go Shopping in Shinsaibashi

You cannot go to Japan and not go shopping! Osaka has amazing spots for shopping all over the city, but my favorite area to get cute gifts is Shinsaibashi.  It is a small strip of shopping.  Shinsaibashi is located right by Dotonbori.  It also has arcades, nightlife, and lots of food!

8)      Tempozan Ferris Wheel

Another way to have a great look over the city of Osaka is to take a ride in the Tempozan Ferris Wheel.  It is located right on the Bay to give you some of the best views of the city.  The Tempozan Ferrris wheel is also a beautiful site to see from the ground any time of day! It is especially beautiful at night as it lights up!

9) Go to a Sumo Wrestling Tournament in Springtime

If you happen to be in Osaka during Sumo Wresting season (Springtime) DO NOT miss the oppottunity to watch a sumo wrestling tourmanent.  Sumo wrestling started in Japan and it is so much fun to watch and be a part of. Don’t miss it! Plan ahead and find a tournament when you are there!

10)   Walk around Tsutenkaku

Tsutenkaku is the old town area in Osaka.  Tsutenkaku is a large (Eiffel like) tower.  You can go up and see the view of the city from the top.  There are also a lot of shops, restaurants, and things to do around the Tsutenkaku area.
The Tsutenkaku tower is the most amazing at night.  It shines bright colors at night.  It is also beautiful during the day, but it lights up the sky a little differently at night! It is definitely worth the visit!

I hope you enjoy your trip to Osaka, Japan.  There is so much to do! These ten places to do in Osaka are just a few of the places you should visit.  Osaka has so much to offer and is easily accessible from anywhere in Japan thanks to the amazing transportation system in Japan!
Have you been to Osaka?  Which places on this list have you been to?  Which are your favorite?  Is there any place in Osaka you really love that didn’t make the list! Let me know.

  1. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!

  2. I absolutely love your website.. Pleasant colors & theme.
Did you create this web site yourself? Please reply back as I’m wanting to create my own personal site and would like to
find out where you got this from or what the theme is named.
    Thanks!

  4. hich creates it an thoughtful publish on your subject. In my opinion, you’ve presented the topic in a quite thorough yet concise manner, that is genuinely useful when someone wants to get the facts without spending too a lot time searching the online world and sifting out the noise to discover the answers to their questions. I usually get so frustrated with so plentiful in the final results inside the major SE’s due to the fact they normally seem to mostly be filled with filler content that often isn’t extremely sensible. If you don’t mind I’m going to add this post and your web page to my delicious favorites so I can share it with my family. I appear forward to coming back to check out your future posts as well.

  5. I was skeptical at first. I was baffled that I could actually take the time to read this long article. The way you write definitely attracted my fascination. Your content is always excellent. Great Article Neil. This article is fantastic. Although I only read it a few times in the past and I did not leave any comments. But, I think this article merited a mention.

  6. I am really loving the theme/design of your weblog. Do you ever run into any internet browser compatibility issues? A number of my blog readers have complained about my website not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Safari. Do you have any recommendations to help fix this problem?
