Things to do, places to go, and activities you cannot miss out on!
Taipei, Taiwan is very beautiful city but has a very different vibe from Tainan, Taiwan. Taipei is a lot more populated, has a lot more to do, more people speak English, and in my opinion is a lot more Americanized. If you are looking to go to Taiwan and just have a few days I would recommend going to Taipei. It is a classic and the most popular city in Taiwan. It also offers everything you would expect Taiwan to offer. The only downside is that Taipei is very populated and that takes away of the true side of Taiwan in my opinion. Off that note, Taipei is a wonderful place to visit and I had a great time!
I was lucky enough to celebrate my birthday in this beautiful city as well, and I am so glad I did. I have been fortunate enough to celebrate my birthday abroad in three countries in my life, and all these places surpassed my expectations. I love traveling and being able to ring in the new year in three different countries makes me feel very lucky I have had the opportunity to do something this amazing. They will always hold a special place in my heart. I didn’t know what to expect from Taipei, but it ended up being a great place to not only explore as a tourist but also celebrate.
Let this guide you on the top 8 best things I did and saw in Taipei, Taiwan. This guide will include historic places to visit, food to try, activities to partake in, and so much more.
The Ultimate Guide to Taipei, Taiwan
1) Taipei 101
This is the most popular monument to visit in Taipei. You can’t go all the way to Taipei and not visit the 10th tallest building in the world. This tower stands 101 stories and 509m (1667ft) tall. One of the most famous things about this building is the famous dumpling shop inside. Din Tai Fung 101. Anyone I asked about Taipei their first reaction was to tell me to go to the dumpling restaurant. This restaurant is famous for its dumplings, but they also have amazing Taiwanese food to try! I would recommend doing both, but more importantly go to the top of Taipei 101.
2) Lantern release
I really like the idea of releasing lanterns with a wish or hopeful message on them for the future. It is a very fun ritual in Asia and to me and being able to do it on your birthday makes it that much more special. The most famous place to do this is at Shifen Old Street in Taipei. Everyone can purchase (or possibly make) a lantern with their own personal messages on it to release into the sky with everyone else. It lights up the sky and gives participants a loving feeling of togetherness and growth.
3) Shi-men Ting
This is the go to place to visit for shopping, bars, restaurants, etc in Taipei, Taiwan. There are several places to eat and hang out. There are so many different kinds of restaurants to try, shops to get souvenirs, places to hang out and drink and so much more! This is the perfect place to go to spend a little personal time in Taipei.
4) HANKO 60
This is a lounge in the Wanhua District of Taipei. It is a bar where people can drink and hang out. This bar is located around a bunch of other nightclubs/bars in the city. You can choose which one is best for you, but I enjoyed this one for the atmosphere and the drink options, (They had drinks that gave off smoke – smoke cocktails. I had never even seen one of these before so it was super interesting to be able to drink one) and how friendly everyone was! Make sure you go out at least to one bar or club during your time in Taipei. It is a very popular thing to do.
5) Elephant mountain
Climbing Elephant mountain in Taipei will give you one of the most amazing views of the city. It is quite a big hike so make sure you allow time and pack accordingly to finish it. This hike is definitely worth it and the #1 thing I will do if I ever get to go back to Taipei! I didn’t have enough time to do this, but looking at pictures makes me very excited to come back and try it!
6) Confucius temple
Do you remember the Confucius Temple we visited in Tainan? Well, that isn’t the only one! There are 3000 Confucius temples all over Asia. It is very interesting to walk around the temples and compare them both and learn about the history. They both looked extremely similar to me. I wonder if all 3000 look very similar or if there are lots of variations depending on the country!
7) Mengjia Longshan Temple
The Mengjia Longshan Temple of Taipei is one of the most famous temples in all of Taipei. It was built way back in 1738 by Chinese settlers settling in Taiwan from China. This was my favorite temple because it was so beautiful and big.
8) Night Markets
Night Markets are not only popular in Tainan, they are popular in so many places in Asia. Tapei has a lot of night markets that are very similar to the ones I went to in Tainan. Ningxia Night Market is closest to everything in the city. Huaxi Street Night Market is only a little more south and just as exciting. They offer similar things that the ones in Tainan offer. They have a huge variety of food to try, games to play, souvenirs to buy, and so much more! Do not miss out on going to a night market if you ever have the chance to go to Taiwan or anywhere else that has them! You will not be disappointed!
