Glamis Sand Dunes

Glamis Sand Dunes

What to pack, photoshoots, camping, yoga, riding, watching and more!

Glamis Sand Dunes

Glamis Sand Dunes in Glamis, California is a large sand dune field located right off the boarder of AZ on the way to San Deigo in Southern California. It is located right off the Highway 78 between and Blythe, CA and Brawley, CA.   It is about a 3.5 hour drive from Phoenix, AZ.  You can see the dunes for miles and get to them right off the main road.

Glamis Sand Dunes is an unincorporated community in Imperial County, California.  It stretches a length of 45 miles long and 6 miles wide.   It is a popular place for people to go dirt biking, camping, have photoshoots, watch the races or just play in the sand.  There is so much to do in the miles and miles of sand.

It is important to remember that the dunes do not have a lot of recreational buildings as it is located in the middle of the desert, so it is important to pack what you will need before you go because there aren’t many places (if at all) to purchase what you forgot at the san dunes.

Here is a list of things you cannot forget before your trip.  Make sure to modify it depending on what type of activity you are planning on participating in and take into account how long you are staying at the site.

What to Pack

1)    Sunscreen

It gets very hot in Southern California in the desert during any time of the year, so make sure to wear and pack extra sunscreen so you don’t damage your skin. Also, don’t forget to reapply sunscreen throughout your day.

2)    Water

Water is the most important item to not forget.  Make sure you bring enough water for you and everyone you are with.  I would even bring extra just in case you or anyone you are with needs more water than initially planned. It’s better to have too much than not enough!

3)    Food

Remember to pack a lunch / snack / dinner depending on how long you are staying at Glamis Sand Dunes.  It is better to pack too much than too little and be hungry on your trip. You can purchase food and drinks at the dunes, but it is very limited, only in certain areas, and expensive.

4)    Foldable chairs

If you plan on watching your kids or the various races bring a chair so you don’t have to sit on the ground.

5)    Towels

Towels can also be used to sit on if you want to watch the races or to sit on while you race or use to clean up at the end of the day.

6)    Trash bags

Be sure not to litter on your trip.  These dunes are so beautiful and the last thing you should be doing is ruining them by leaving your trash behind.

7)    Charger for your phone

Don’t let you phone die if you are unsure on how to get home or to your next destination. You can even bring a portable charging bank so you don’t have to charge in your car. (This is a pack of two for the best price and works very well at charging your phone fast.)

8)    Good shoes

Bring the appropriate shoes for your trip.  I would bring old tennis shoes or any comfortable shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.

*Add to the list depending on your specific activity.   These are just the basic items not to forget.

Activities for Glamis Sand Dunes

1) Do some stretching / yoga

Take some time to do some yoga or stretches at sunrise or sunset.  Being in the middle of no where practicing yoga is such a great feeling and I would recommend it to anyone.

2) Have a photoshoot

I have never had an official photoshoot at the Glamis Sand Dunes, but I hope to one day…but if you don’t have a professional photographer with you you can still get amazing photos because the scenery is absolutely beautiful on any camera.  Watch out for the gusty wind and be careful not to drop of damage your equipment in the sand.

3) Go off-Roading (OHV)

This is probably the most popular event to do at the Glamis Sand Dunes.  People come from all over to take their OHV around for hours.  There are races or you can participate on your own.  I did not participate in this so I would dig deeper if you want more info on this

3) Watch the races

Anyone can come and watch the races at the sand dunes.  I would just bring something to sit on.  It can be a chair or a towel or anything else you fancy.

4) Camping

There are 4 campsites at Glamis sand dunes.  Each of them have different rules, so I would research and find out which one is the best suited towards your goals.  Camping at the dunes is so beautiful.  My favorite part is watching the sunrise and sunset after a long day.

I hope you enjoy your trip to the Glamis San Dunes.  People can spend days at this site because it is so much fun and there is so much to do!  What is your favorite thing to do there? Is there anything I missed that you really enjoy about the Glamis Sand Dunes?
