Solo Female Travel – best places

Best places to travel as a solo female

with prices!

12 places you cannot miss!

Traveling alone is a lot different than traveling with a group or a friend.  It is very important to stay alert and aware of your surroundings if you decide to go somewhere alone …especially as a female.  It is very liberating to travel alone, and I challenge everyone to try it at least once. Traveling alone means you can do whatever you want whenever you want, and who doesn’t love that every so often.

Solo female travel also does come with some price tags. You must be alert and aware of your surroundings and use your head! I have traveled to almost 15 countries alone – read what I always look out for and rules I have for myself when traveling alone HERE.

Being a female shouldn’t slow you down or keep you from traveling anywhere in the world, but you do need to be a little more alert unfortunately.  DO not let that cramp your style though! You can do almost everything you would do with friends alone just make sure to give yourself a few extra rules.

You can travel almost anywhere alone as a female, but these are my top picks.  These can also be done in groups or as a male.

*I am writing this in the perspective of a white extroverted American girl. Everything is basically the same for every girl in my opinion, but there are always differences in personality and people’s perspective looking at you.

*All the prices are approximate and daily budget is based upon hostel travel.

Have fun, and here are my top picks on places to visit on your solo female travel adventure.

Best places to visit as a solo female traveler

1)      Amsterdam

Hostel per night: ~$30

Hotel per night: ~$150

Food per day: ~$15

Estimated budget per day: $60

Amsterdam is the first place I ever traveled as a solo female, and my experience there will forever give a huge light to Dutch people.  I had one of the most fun 24 hours I have ever had there, and everyone I met (who were all guys) were extremely nice and welcoming and did not pressure me to do anything I didn’t want to do.  I  know I have said this 100x, but 10/10 to the Dutch!

Amsterdam also has great transportation and the airport is located right in the city so you don’t need to worry about getting to locations because it is already right there! You can also use the public transport or even rent a bike to see and get around the city.  Amsterdam is also relatively cheap and has a lot of housing and food options everywhere.

Read more about Amsterdam here.

2)      Japan

Hostel per night: ~$20-$40 (ranges upon city but averaged about $40)

Hotel per night: ~$80 (can go higher, but this is a budget range)

Food per day: ~$35

Estimated budget per day: ~$80

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world.  It also has the most amazing and efficient transportation all throughout the country that I have ever experienced in my life. It is not the cheapest place to visit …it is actually more on the expensive side…but there are always wants to save money and it is a great and safe place to travel as a female.

Read more about Japan here.

3)      Philippines

Hostel per night: ~$10

Hotel per night: ~$30

Food per day: ~$15

Estimated budget per day: ~$35

The Philippines is an absolutely gorgeous place to visit. From it’s amazing beaches to divine culture, The Philippines is an amazing place to be. It also has some of the most Instagram-able places in the world! Don’t forget, The Philippines is also extremely cheap!

( I have never been here, but I do know females that have gone there alone…so this is not my experience, but my educated take away)

4)      Istanbul

Hostel per night: ~$8

Hotel per night: ~$15

Food per day: ~$15

Estimated budget per day: ~$30

Istanbul is a great place for solo female travelers for a lot of reasons.  First of all, it is cheap.  You can stay in a hostel for under $10 a night and food is even cheaper! The sites and places to go in the city are also free or very cheap! The city is also very walkable and has good public transportation. In my opinion, Istanbul is a very congested busy city with lots to do. My only thing to look out for are the guys that try to bring you away or scam you. As a white girl traveling alone in any city in the middle eastern region I do get followed around and approached a lot more than other places, but it isn’t always a bad thing. Stay alert and smart, and you will be fine.

5)      Italy

Hostel per night: ~$15-$50

Hotel per night: ~$100

Food per day: ~$30

Estimated budget per day: $55

Italy is one of my favorite places in the world…and I would never miss out on a chance to go there – with friends or alone. Italy’s big cities are very walkable and easy to get to and from with the trains all around Europe. Italy is also very safe and friendly for solo travelers. It is easy to meet people and there is so much to do everywhere you go. Each city has its own charm and can be visited for days. I love Italy. I love Italians. Go to every city for as long as you can…but always remember to be respectful everywhere you go.

6)      Germany

Hostel per night: ~$25

Hotel per night: ~$100

Food per day: ~$25

Estimated budget per day: $60

Germany is another one of my top European cities. This country is huge, and every city is a little different from the others. Germany has great public transportation to the bigger cities in the country, and every city is very walkable. If you plan on going to the smaller cities I would recommend getting a car, but it is not required. Germany can also be done on a tight budget and the amount of history and beauty of this country is unmatched.

7)      Tel Aviv, Israel

Hostel per night: ~$40

Hotel per night: ~$200

Food per day: ~$40

Estimated budget per day: $80

Of course I had to put Israel on this list! I love Israel, but do remember it is one of the most expensive cities in the world…but thanks to street vendors and hostels it can be done for a lot cheaper than you’d expect. Tel Aviv is very walkable and the bus system is okay. If you want to go to other parts of the country you will need a car or to take a tour. Israel has more religious history than any country I have ever been to. It also has amazing destinations, food, beaches and so much more!

*US citizens do not need to worry too much about getting in and out of the country, but make sure to check your visa requirements before you go. If you need help contact me.

8)    Singapore

Hostel per night: ~$30

Hotel per night: ~$150

Food per day: ~$40

Estimated budget per day: $70

Singapore is very small so it is easy to get around and see everything in even just a day.  It has great public transportation and most everything is in English. The only downside is it is a little expensive if you are there alone and don’t want to stay in a hostel. Just stay for a day or two and you will be good! Singapore is an amazingly clean, rich, and beautiful city you have to visit at least once!

9)      San Francisco

Hostel per night: ~$40

Hotel per night: ~$180

Food per day: ~$50

Estimated budget per day: ~$90

I might be slightly biased, but SF is a great place to visit alone or just in general. It is a very versatile city with city life as well as many hikes and outdoor activities all around the bay. Of everywhere I have been in the world, San Francisco bay area is the most versatile in terms of people. There are people from all over the world there an you can find just about anything from any culture. Not to mention it is iconic and has the best weather in America. Don’t forget about San Francisco during your trip to America.

10)    Bucharest, Romania

Hostel per night: ~$10

Hotel per night: ~$55

Food per day: ~$15

Estimated budget per day: $30

Eastern Europe is the cheapest place to go if you are on a budget on your solo adventure. I particularity liked Bucharest for the people and small town vibes. It is a rather low maintience city, but it is so charming and everything is cheap! The only downside is that is does not have good public transportation. It is there yes – you can take a small light rail around the city and a bus to the airport. Uber is available there as well (when I was there in 2020) and it is cheap. If you plan on just staying in the city you will not need a car as everything is relatively close.

Other parts of Romania up north are very worth visiting. You can take a bus to the castles or take a tour with a group. It is almost the same price and with a tour you don’t have to think. I usually do not do tours, but in Romania I made an exception, and it was definitely worth it.

11)    Athens, Greece

Hostel per night: ~$20

Hotel per night: ~$70

Food per day: ~$15

Estimated budget per day: $40

Greece!! My favorite country in the world to visit, I have gone there with friends and alone. It is cheap, has some of the most amazing beaches and history of anywhere on earth in my opinion. The only downside is that the public transportation sometimes shuts down, but the city is walkable so it is not always necessary, and it does not happen very often!

12)    Thailand

Hostel per night: ~$10

Hotel per night: ~$40

Food per day: ~$15

Estimated budget per day: $40

Southeast Asia is a great place for solo travel on a budget. This area of the world is the cheapest place I have ever been. You can stay in a hostel for less than $10 or live like a king for $100. There is public transportation, but most tourists get around by tuk tuk. Don’t let them rip you off or take you somewhere you don’t want to go. Overall the city is amazing, and Thailand as a whole is absolutely stunning and it is the TOP on my list of places I have to go back to.

I hope this list of the best places to travel as a solo female makes it easier for you to pick your next adventure. Solo female travel is amazing, and these are just some of the few places that I have gone. These are some of my favorites, but there are so many more that are not on the list. Solo female travel can be done just about anywhere if you stay alert and follow these rules. Have you been to anywhere on this list? Which one is your favorite? Is there anywhere that you have solo female traveled that I missed? Let me know where you went! I would love to hear from you. Have fun!
