Top places to Visit in Israel
Are you planning a trip to Israel? Are you trying to figure out the best places to visit in the beautiful country? This article will go through the top 11 places to visit in Israel. There are so many amazing places to visit in Israel so you may be a little overwhelmed on where to go first, but this article will help you with your decision making! There are so many places to explore in Israel from big cities, to outdoor adventures, to natural wonders, to the most religious city in the world! Read the article below to get a brief overview of the best places you cannot miss in this beautiful country
Tel Aviv is probably the most popular place to stay and first spot you need to visit in Israel. It is one of the top tourist locations and located in the Middle part of Israel right on the beach! There is so much in this bustling city from markets, surfing, restaurants, and so much more! This city can be explored just on it’s own for weeks, but if you only have a few days don’t miss the top highlights! I will be writing a more detailed description of Tevl Aviv and my favorite places you cannot miss during your Israel tourist visit soon! Read more about Tel Aviv here.
2) Jaffa
Jaffa is within walking distance from Tel Aviv and also a very popular tourist destination in Israel. It is the oldest part of Tel Aviv. It is a famous and cute port town south of Tel Aviv! This city is said to be over 4000 years old and is my favorite “part” of Tel Aviv. It is a very charming city and makes you feel like you are taking a step back in time. It is a relatively small city, but there is so much to do you will not be bored. There are shops, boats, museums, and so much more. Make sure you do not miss it during your trip to Israel!
3) The Dead Sea
The Dead sea is my favorite place to visit in Israel. It is one of the most amazing natural wonders on Earth! It is over 30 miles in length and lays 1412ft (430.5meters) below sea level which makes it the lowest habitable spot in the world. The Dead Sea is a salt lake that lies between Israel and Jordan. You can visit one of the many beaches and rub the salt and mud on your skin and float naturally on the water for amazing natural spa results. There are no living creatures in the water so no need to worry about fish or sea week or any living creature while you are floating in the water. This is a must see on your trip to Israel!
I love the dead sea, and I did go there twice over 2 years apart and the sea felt a lot less salty the second time around. The first time I went I wasn’t even able to push my feet down into the water to stand up because the salt pushed my body up too much…but the second time I could easily dive underwater. Global warming is definitely changing the world so PLEASE be conscious of what you are putting into the world. It may not have any immediate results, but it is changing the world we live in. This is my first real life experience where I experienced what climate change is doing to the Earth…so PLEASE be nice to the planet you are living on. You can’t survive without it!
4) Masada
Masada is a mountain that overlooks the dead sea. It is known to be the site of the Jew’s last stand against the Romans after the fall of Jerusalem in 70. It is a small mountain where you can witness a beautiful sunrise as the sun comes up over the Dead Sea. You can stand at the top of Masada and look at the sun rising over the lowest point on earth. It happens very early but is 1000% worth it. You can only see the sun rise over the lowest point on earth in Israel. It is an absolutely beautiful site and so colorful!
Jerusalem is the oldest and probably most famous city in Israel. It is also the most religious city in the world. Jerusalem holds many places of religious importance for Judaism, Christianity, and Islamic people. There is the Western Wall, Dome of the Rock, the Old City and so much more! I would definitely stay here for a night or two if you have the time. Jerusalem at day and night are very different, and I would recommend experiencing both! There is so much to explore in Jerusalem no matter if you are religious or not. I went to Jerusalem with no knowledge on anything, and I learned SO MUCH and have such a higher appreciation for it now. Read more about it here.
6) Bethlehem
Bethlehem is right next to Jerusalem on the Palestine side of the country. I had to take a tour to get in because they do not just let people walk in (or at least in my experience). Everything was very organized and monitored and tourists could only go where the tour guide brought them. We got to only really see where Jesus was born and a small shop on the way out. I would still highly recommend going to Bethlehem! It is one of those places that brings books to life. I enjoyed learning more about the religious side of the city and had a very impactful time.
7) Sea of Galilee
The Sea of Gailee is a freshwater lake in the middle of Israel. It is known to be the place that Jesus walked on water. (I could not) It is an amazingly beautiful body of water with many activities to do in the surrounding towns. The Sea of Galilee the towns around it are very old and religious. Remember, per Israeli culture, if you end up going on the weekend due to Shabbat you need to go on Friday (not Saturday) for it to be open. If you go on Saturday everything will be closed and no one will be out.
8) Eilat
Eilat is the southernmost town in Israel. Eilat is about 4 hours from Tel Aviv on the border of the Red Sea. It is a very colorful and lively beach town known for its marine life. There is amazing diving and marine activities to do in Eilat. You can even supposedly see pink dolphins (I didn’t see them). I recommend staying there for a few days to get everything done! Since I only had a day in Eilat I did not get to do all the activities that are recommended. I have learned a lot more about this beautiful city in the past year, so Eilat will be the first place I go if I ever go back to Israel!
9) Haifa
Haifa is the biggest northern city in Israel. It is known for its huge port and Bahai Faith. There are many beautiful shrines and gardens honoring the faith throughout the city! Also don’t forget to get Israeli’s best falafels in the city! Haifa is a very popular tourist destination in Northern Israel.
Rosh Hanikra is the northern most city in Israel bordering Lebanon. It is a cave of spectacular grottos formed by the Mediterranean Sea. You can ride a gondola to the beautiful caves and walk around the caves and the city. It is a few hours from Tel Aviv, but it is a beautiful place to explore, and it is great to see more of a small town. I would definitely add it to your list of destinations to explore in Northern Israel. Read more about them here.
11) Banias Waterfalls
There are many waterfalls in Northern Israel, but my favorite is the Banias Waterfall. It is very big, and you must hike a small trail to get to the bottom of the waterfall. Banias Waterfall is billowing and large, and you will get wet if you stand close to it! The Banias Waterfall is so strong that the wind and water will soak you if you stay near it for too long! Also make sure to dress warm and bring water to drink during your time there. There are many other waterfalls and hikes nearby this one. If you have the time I would recommend going to a few in a day since they are all relatively close. Northern Israel is very beautiful and there are many outdoor activities you can do during your time there.
These are my top 11 travel destinations in Israel, but there are so many more places I didn’t even mention. I will be writing about each spot individually in more detail, but as an outline this is a great way to plan your trip! There are hundreds of other beautiful destinations in Israel that are not mentioned in this article. There are even hundreds of details for each destination mentioned because there is so much to do! Make sure you don’t miss these spots and even add your own to your Israel bucket list! Each town and place has it’s own unique charm and deserves to be explored by everyone who has the opportunity!
Which ones are your favorite? Have you been to any of these destinations in Israel? Did I miss any that you really enjoy or want to know more about? Let me know! Happy travels on your trip to Israel!
