Socially Distant Travel Ideas

Socially Distant Travel Ideas

Socially Distant Travel Activities you can do in your hometown during the pandemic.

As we end 2020… AKA the least traveled year ever, I wanted to give you some socially distant activities you can still enjoy while being safe during a pandemic.  There isn’t only one way to travel! The options are endless, you just have to be safe and smart about how you travel. If you absolutely NEED to travel during the pandemic follow this guide.  I know many people are getting very restless and want to just get on a plane, fly away to a popular location, see and socialize with a bunch of new people, and enjoy their time in a place where many other people go…but unfortunately – in the state of the world right now – that is a very bad idea and shouldn’t be part of your travel plans until things go back to normal.

There are so many other ways to have fun until the pandemic is over.  2020 has been a great time to be alone or in small groups, and these ideas will give you the best of a bad situation.  Here are some of my top socially distant travel ideas and activities to enjoy yourself while still being socially distant.  Here’s to a brighter and more traveled year! Here’s to a brighter 2021!

1)      RV Road Trip in the Wilderness

This is my favorite idea if you have a little more time for your socially distant travel plans.  2020 has been a year of isolation and inner growth so what better way to do both of those things than to travel around far away from most of the population?  You can go camping this way as well as see the world in a way that probably most people haven’t seen.  Road tripping in the wilderness will keep you away from the highly populated areas in the city and maybe even help you realize how much more is out there that you have never seen before. Go experience something new!

2)      Hiking

Hiking can be done just about anywhere as long as there is the outdoors.  Being outdoors is very therapeutic and can help just about anyone during this pandemic.  Just being outside can ease your mind and help your mental health improve. You can simply go for an hour hike or be gone for hours – even days.  The possibilities are endless.  Just makes sure to dress accordingly and bring appropriate items for your trip.   Also make sure to stay away from very popular hikes.  Venture out to find something that isn’t as well known. You might like it and again … experience something new!

3)      Socially distanced beach activities

I know a lot of beaches are open around the world, so please make sure you take precautions if you go.  Do not go if it is super crowded, and If you do go make sure you have a large enough area to be far away from others on the beach.  Make sure you also bring your own towel, sunscreen and other supplies as to not share with others.  In addition, if the beach you are at is crowded don’t forget to wear your mask if you are close to others.  If the beach is not crowded enjoy your time alone. Lay down, enjoy the sun, and have a great day!  This can be one of the best socially distant activities if you live in an area that isn’t super populated.

4)      Camping

Camping is my favorite socially distant activity!  Camping can be done in so many different places! You can camp in your backyard or travel hours into the wilderness to get to that perfect spot.  Either way you will be out in nature and not around people.  This is a great way to stay safe while still having fun during this pandemic.

5)      Bike touring

Riding your bike around can be a great way to be socially distant while also getting very good exercise! Depending on the area you live you can ride your bike miles around your town or city.  Feel free to bike to the lake, to the mountain, just around the neighborhood, and more.  It is a great way to get out there while also getting a good workout in. You can ride for hours or simply ride your bike to a relaxing area and have a picnic or read a book at your destination. Either way, this is a great activity to do alone or with a friend. It can make your entire day brighter.

6)      Kayaking

If you like being on the water and have your own kayak this is a great socially distant activity for you!  You can float in the lake and soak up the sun, get a nice tan, and even get some exercise.  Just make sure to plan accordingly as for all these activities.  Bring your water, sunscreen, towel, food, and anything else you might need! Sometimes time can get away from you when you are on the lake so be sure to drink plenty of water and pack snacks so you don’t have to end your day early!

7)      Lake

Being on the lake is one of my favorite activities, and there are so many things you can do while on it.  You can sit on the sand, have a picnic, swim, kayak, hike around, go on your boat and more! The lake has so many socially distant activities you can participate in! Just be sure not to go if it is super populated.  Try to go on off hours or days so you can have the place to yourself (or close to it)!

8)      Have a picnic

Picnics can be had just about anywhere, but they will still get you outside the house.  Get a basket, make your favorite foods, grab some drinks, and go to the park with a friend (or alone) to enjoy your food and time.  I love having picnics at the park or anywhere that has some pretty trees and water. You can even read or write after your meal while just enjoying the place that you are in.

9)      Take a Walk

This may sound super basic, but it will definitely bring up your mood.  Just being outside for even 5 minutes can help you become more productive, lighten your mood, and boost your day. Take some time to smell the roses and just see how different your day gets. Nature can help us in so many ways, so why not take advantage of it. Just remember to take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints! Have safe and fun socially distant traveling until the pandemic is over or even whenever you want to!

Being socially distant doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time. There are thousands of things you can do that are fun, but also are safe to do during this pandemic that we are currently facing! The socially distant activities mentioned are only a fraction of the available activities you can do while still following socially distant guidelines while outside!  Inside there are thousands of other things you can learn and do. You can read about some of them here.

Here’s to a more bright and more traveled 2021! In the meantime until this pandemic is over, just please just be courteous these next few months so we can start going back to normal! We all want to go to parties, hug our friends, see all of our loved ones…but we can’t do that unless we ALL work together to end the virus. It isn’t just about you, this pandemic has changed everyone’s lives. We all want to go back to normal. Please do your part so we can have a better year! Continue to be socially distant, better yourself as humans, learn new things, and experience new activities that you haven’t done before.

Life is about growth, so take this time to grow as much as you possibly can. Here’s to a brighter future!

  1. I have definitely been utilizing the bike/Beach idea, combined. Fortunately, I am not far from beautiful beaches here in L.A., so during the summer, I biked at one every week. It was refreshing to be able to get out for awhile. I still can’t wait for travel to be restored, though! 🙏🏽🙂
